What is your background and experience?

“I got into AC and heating after I was laid off from my old job,” says Sean. “I wanted to build a real career for myself that would support a family and that I can rely on the rest of my life.”

To this end, Sean did some hard research looking at all the different trades available including welding, electrical, and plumbing. He settled on HVAC-R, which combines elements of all three trades.

He earned certification from Fortis College-Houston South’s HVAC-R program, a trade school located in the former West Oaks Mall.

“I’m EPA-universal certified and have my TDLR Technician’s license,” Sean explains.

He will be working toward his first national HVAC certification through NATE this fall. NATE stands for North American Technician Excellence and is a national credential that is highly sought after in the HVAC trade.

Previously, Sean worked at two different landscaping jobs.

What was the most surprising thing you’ve experienced so far?

Sean says that the AC and heating field is a lot different from school. “You have to adapt to each system, each house, each call. You never know what you’re walking into.”

The customer service aspect of the job is different from landscaping and the expectations are higher he observes.

“For air conditioning, customers expect more out of you than they do for landscaping…if the AC is not working, they want it done.”

What do you like most about the job?

He likes always being on the move, and the challenges which change each day. “I don’t like to stay in the same spot. I could never work a desk job. This job is different every day.”

He received some real-world experience working with an instructor installing air conditioning and heating systems. “I liked being able to start and finish something. When we turn the AC on, everything is working,” he says. “It’s a satisfying feeling that it’s all working how it should be.”

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Sean has a lot of different interests including playing the guitar and video games. He describes himself as “really into art” and “always working on my car.” Clearly, he has a talent and patience for working with mechanical systems that will serve him well.

Sean also enjoys spending time with his girlfriend and exploring the Houston area. “We do a lot of exploring parks, taking hikes, and fishing.”
